DNC launches new "Party of No" clock

The Democratic National Committee launched a new "Party of No" Clock that highlights the number of days, hours and minutes Republicans in Washington have gone just saying "no" instead of offering a substantive alternative to President Obama's budget.

On February 26, the President proposed a groundbreaking federal budget that will end fiscal gimmickry, restore honesty and accountability to the process, and make critical investments to rebuild and renew America. At every step, the Republican Party has chosen Rush Limbaugh-inspired obstruction over progress. As House Republican Whip Eric Cantor told the Washington Post, the Republican Party's approach to the Obama agenda is "just saying no." The DNC's new "Party of No" Clock will keep count of the number of days Republicans in Washington continue to say no without offering an alternative.

"Instead of joining Democrats in working to pass practical steps to confront the challenges we face, Republicans have been passing their time just saying no to everything the President proposes," said Democratic National Committee Communications Director Brad Woodhouse. "The American people want leaders who will work together to confront the challenges we face, not more of the same broken politics from Rush Limbaugh-led do-nothings. Instead of petty politics and empty obstructionism, Republicans in Congress should either support the President's budget or present their own plan to create jobs, fix our schools, reform our health care system, and make America energy independent."

Cantor: GOP Strategy is "Just Saying No." "The second-ranking House Republican, Rep. Eric Cantor ( Va.), put it more bluntly. 'What transpired... and will give us a shot in the arm going forward is that we are standing up on principle and just saying no,' he said." [Washington Post, 2/9/09]

Every Single House Republican Voted "No" On Bill to Create or Save 3.5 Million Jobs. "Without a single Republican vote, President Obama won House approval on Wednesday for an $819 billion economic recovery plan as Congressional Democrats sought to temper their own differences over the enormous package of tax cuts and spending... All but 11 Democrats voted for the plan, and 177 Republicans voted against it. The 244-to-188 vote came a day after Mr. Obama traveled to Capitol Hill to seek Republican backing, if not for the package then on other issues to come." [New York Times, 1/29/09]

All But Three Senate Republicans Voted "No" on American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. "Obama signed the stimulus package into law February 17. The Congressional Budget Office has estimated that the plan will create between 1 million and 3 million jobs. The package passed Congress on a virtual party-line vote, with no Republicans supporting it in the House and only three Republicans voting for it in the Senate." [CNN, 3/6/09]

RNC Chairman Threatens To Withhold RNC Funds From GOP Senators Who Backed Recovery. "On Fox News, Republican National Committee chair Michael Steele said he was open to withholding RNC funds from the three GOP Senators who backed President Obama's stimulus package... Speaking of Senators Arlen Specter, Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe, Steele said that the Senators were likely to face primaries as a result of their vote for the stimulus bill. Then Steele was asked by Fox's Neil Cavuto: 'Will you, as RNC head, recommend no RNC funds being provided to help them?' Steele confirmed that he would 'talk to the state parties about.' When pressed on whether he was open to it, Steele said: 'Oh, yes, I'm always open to everything, baby, absolutely.'" [Washington Post, Plum Line blog, 2/24/09]

Republicans Say "No" to SCHIP Expansion: Bill to Provide Health Care for 11 Million Children Passes "Largely Along Party Lines." "The Senate overwhelmingly approved legislation yesterday to provide health insurance to 11 million low-income children, a bill that would for the first time spend federal money to cover children and pregnant women who are legal immigrants. Lawmakers voted 66 to 32, largely along party lines, to renew the joint state-federal program and spend an additional $32.8 billion to expand coverage to 4 million more children." [Washington Post, 1/29/09]

Republicans Say "No" to Equal Pay Act, Bill Passes in Party Line Vote. "President Obama signed his first bill Thursday, a gender pay equity law that had been a hallmark of his campaign for the White House... Earlier this month, the Democratic-run Congress voted largely along party lines to essentially reverse that ruling with a new law that extends the deadline every time a discriminatory pay check is issued." [USA Today, 1/29/09]

Leader of the GOP, Rush Limbaugh: "I Hope he Fails." "In his broadcast on Jan. 16, Limbaugh told listeners he had been asked by a major publication for a 400-word statement about his hopes for the new administration: 'I'm thinking of replying to the guy, 'OK, I'll send you a response, but I don't need 400 words. I need four: I hope he fails.' ...Then, exacerbating the wound, Limbaugh added this in an interview on Sean Hannity's Jan. 21 show on Fox News: 'We are being told that we have to hope he succeeds, that we have to bend over, grab the ankles, bend over forward, backward, whichever, because his father was black, because this is the first black president.' Limbaugh would repeat some variant of this remark at least four more times in the next month and a half. Really, President Obama could not have asked for more: Limbaugh gets an audience, Obama gets a target and Republicans get the blame." [Newsweek, 3/16/09]

RNC Chairman Apologizes for Criticizing Limbaugh. "Two days after calling conservative commentator Rush Limbaugh a mere 'entertainer' with an 'incendiary' talk show, Republican National Committee chairman Michael Steele apologized and acknowledged him as a 'national conservative leader.' 'To the extent that my remarks helped the Democrats in Washington to take the focus, even for one minute, off of their irresponsible expansion of government, I truly apologize,' Steele said late Monday." [AP, 3/3/09]

Congressional Republicans "Rally Against Obama On Stem Cells." "However, not included in that 'consensus,' are conservatives and Republican lawmakers and organizations that have started an opposition rally cry... House Republican Leader John Boehner said the president's repeal of the ban, 'runs counter to President Obama's promise to be a president for all Americans. For a third time in his young presidency, the president has rolled back important protections for innocent life, further dividing our nation at a time when we need greater unity to tackle the challenges before us.' ...The top Republican in the Senate, Mitch McConnell, called the president's reversal of former president George W. Bush's 2001 ban a 'troubling shift.' 'With this announcement, the government is, for the first time, incentivizing the creation and destruction of human embryos at the expense of the U.S. taxpayer,' McConnell said. House Minority Whip Eric Cantor released a statement which said, 'unfortunately, today the Administration wasted an opportunity to unite our country around these ethically and scientifically sound innovations by allowing the use of taxpayer money for embryo-destructive stem cell research, which millions of Americans find morally reprehensible. This divisive action will divert scarce federal resources away from innovative and proven adult stem cell research.'" [CBS News, 3/9/09]

There's the Bait and switch from Michael Steele. Reminiscent of John McCain giving Shrub the hug. Or when Daddy Bush embraced the voodoo economics.

An easy solution to the world's mess would be to encourage peace and justice. A good starting point would be an 80% reduction in the Military-Industrial Complex along with the disbanding of the Spy factories. There is no need for the CIA and NSA. Only propaganda stands in the way of such truths that those organisations are threats to democracy and world peace.

Terrorism can be fought by treating it as crime.

Every time the Democrats have regained the Presidency, they have been left with a financial mess. I think the Republicans desire the economy to fail for the next years, then scapegoat Obama as a Jimmy Carter failure, as a novice politician in over his head.

The rich have theirs. So what do they care if the middle class and poor suffer.

But to be blunt, this is the kind of stuff which leads to Democrats losing power. The other side cheats, and cynical "Al From" Democrats sell out to triangulation and other such nonsense.

Dave ended up at the Democratic Underground for a while. Here is the link to his journals.

One can check out the journal discussions and see how DU is only different from DKos in regards to packaging.

I have also started a new blog dedicated to Dave's vision at:

    http://davefromqueens2.blogspot.com

One of my recent entries linked Fingerit further to the power structure at DU. A lot of folks want us to be Kos-centric or in general, to not make connections spanning many domains. I believe if Dave had lived, it would have only been a matter of time before he would make such connections.

Dave's last journal entry fleshed out more of the established idea that Democratic presidencies have entered into power having to fix the ludicrous excesses of previous Republican administrations.

    Thanks Karen.

I want Antoinette to know that the new blog is not some kind of statement about this place. I love DaveFromQueens.com and the work she is doing.

I believe we need to create pockets of awareness. I believe we need to create safe havens for thoughtful progressives and democrats to post in peace without worry of any flamefests or unfair attacks.

The videos done with Dave are brilliant. I sincerely believe he could have become Mayor or President. He had charisma and a goodness that can't be faked.

Plus, he exhibited all of the signs of being a genius.

Dave's strong moral fiber was a testament to the integrity and love of the Weintraub family. I hope things are getting a bit easier. My mom died a few years back. It does get easier. Yet, you may find brief periods next year where the pain returns, when it really settles in that he is gone. But the sad periods will lessen in exhaustion and will evolve into a deeper awareness of all he was able to get done. Everything Dave did was for the betterment of the world. That is what I think of, when I think of DaveFromQueens.

There is plenty of good info out there on Dave's accomplishments. Hopefully, that can give you some comfort. It is unfair he was taken away at such a young age. But he was able to get so much done.

Anyone who hasn't seen Dave speak must take a look at the youtube videos. Dave was as normal and nice a guy as there is. The videos prove that.

Abbeysbooks has also joined forces at the new place. I'm thinking pockets of awareness, Antoinette. We have these small places all over the internet. Eventually good people will find out the truth and realise that the major "progressive" forums, especially the comment sections, can be filled not only with misinformation but with actual hate speech. That is not what this world needs, and that was one of the successes Dave accomplished when he outed the UGOG/KosKops.

The more voices, the better. We must continue to fight for what's right. That's what Dave wanted. He had several people on his list to expose including Hannity and the far-right neocons. The goal is to expose the truth and the lies. I continue to expose them with video and soon with audio. Videos don't lie, only neocons. I'm taking this to another level. Dave knew my capabilities. That's why he teamed with me with the website. The goal was to expose these cowards publicly. And I will continue to do so in his memory.
