Cheers And Jeers Blackmail

Oh you've got to love this.

Cheers and Jeers is actually a fairly good article at DailyKos. It speaks for the site for Bill in Portland Maine has front page status.  The sequence probably generates money for Markos.  If Bill gets 1000 hits a day for his work, Markos makes money from blog ads that result from this activity.  So why won't Markos pay Bill a salary?  Why not cut the check for $33,000?  Why beg your readers, mostly white males in their 40s and 50s whose generations gave us Reagan and both Bush's and who enjoy being Stockholm Syndrome Destroy the Party Democrats, for the money?  Supposedly you are generating 25-50 million dollars a year from your website. (sites of similar traffic make far less, remember it's a business plan and in all candor, it's been a good one.)

Answer - Daily Kos is a product not a soapbox.  This is all about money for Markos Moulitsas, the megalomaniac who is from the libertarian democrat, unapologetic liberal, Reagan republican, strong progressive, DLC, Henry Hyde supporting, who cares about ideology wing of the Democratic Party.

Go pay for it yourself.  Then again, his faux middle class Dear Wife, actually had the chutzpah to claim that a vacation for her family in Hawaii is too expensive after she and Markos spent several thousand dollars vacationing this week.  Phony.

Dave, if it's a choice between being Kos funded or reader funded, I'll choose the latter. There is no blackmail going on. I lost my job a year and a half ago and readers raised the money so I could write C&J full time. If they get sick of me and drop their support, that's their right.

I don't know what kind of traffic C&J generates for Kos. I write it (and have for over 5 years) because I enjoy it and it helps me maintain my sanity. The fact that readers think enough of it to drop some coin in the hat is a plus for which I'm very thankful.

This isn't the first post I've read criticizing the fact that C&J is reader-funded. I'm sure it won't be the last. But I'll be darned if I understand why people bother.

Thanks for the explanation and I think you do a great job.

No one I know is criticizing you over and certainly if you prefer it this way, all the power to you.

What people find critical, and I"m far from the first, is that your feature makes money for the blog so he should pay you, not the viewers.

Notwithstanding such, you have every right to keep this arrangement and I'm glad you enjoy it.
